SAN DIEGO/IMPERIAL — As part of the second annual Clean California Community Days, aimed at cleaning up and beautifying the Golden State, Caltrans welcomes the public to bring non-hazardous, unwanted household items to a Clean California Dump Day in San Diego & Imperial Counties. Caltrans will have staff on-site to accept approved waste and debris free of charge on Saturday, April 20 from 8 A.M. to 12 P.M. (*or until capacity is reached at the site).

  • 570 C St., Chula Vista 91910 – Caltrans Chula Vista Maintenance Yard
  • 200 East Second St., Imperial 92251 – Imperial Valley Fairgrounds

Made possible through Governor Gavin Newsom’s sweeping $1.2 billion, multiyear effort led by Caltrans to remove trash, create thousands of jobs, and engage communities to transform public spaces, Clean California Community Days encourages local beautification efforts to clean up roadways, local streets, and public spaces. As part of the litter collection component, Caltrans is hosting free dump day events where the public can dispose of household waste safely and properly for free to decrease highway debris and illegal dumping. Caltrans District 11 has held more than 40 such events in San Diego and Imperial Counties since launching Clean California in 2021.

Prohibited items that will not be accepted include hazardous waste (batteries, paint, oils, flammables, etc.), construction debris (concrete, dirt, asphalt, asbestos), compressed gas, aerosols, treated wood waste, refrigerators, and freezers. Four mattresses and four tires separated from the rims per household will be accepted. Scheduled events and prohibited items are subject to change. For more information and prohibited items please visit https://dot.ca.gov/caltrans-near-me/district-11/popular-links/freedumpster.

Caltrans reminds motorists to properly secure and tarp all cargo loads prior to driving. Transporting unsecured loads is unsafe, illegal, and pollutes California's roads and waterways. Loads that are not tied down, enclosed, or secured by tarps or other means, may not be accepted.

About Clean California:

This event is made possible by Governor Gavin Newsom’s Clean California initiative, a sweeping, $1.2 billion, multiyear cleanup effort led by Caltrans to remove trash, create thousands of jobs, and join with communities throughout the state to reclaim, transform and beautify public spaces.

Since launching Clean California in July 2021, Caltrans and its local partners have picked up 2.3 million cubic yards of litter – enough to fill about 700 Olympic-size swimming pools. Caltrans has hosted more than 500 free dump days in communities throughout the state – resulting in the collection of 12,000-plus mattresses and nearly 50,000 tires. The initiative has drawn more than 10,000 community clean-up volunteers and created 15,000 jobs, including positions for individuals who were formerly incarcerated, on probation, or experiencing housing insecurity.
