Lane Closures on SR-13 and SR-24 in Oakland For Fuel Reduction Early April-Late August 2024

Published:

OAKLAND / ALAMEDA COUNTY – Caltrans will be closing lanes on northbound State Route 13 from Interstate 580 to State Route 24 to accommodate fuel reduction. Caltrans will also be closing lanes on SR-24 from I-580 to the Caldecott Tunnel.

The work will take place during daytime hours and is scheduled to begin in early April and complete in late August 2024. Exact days and times will be announced in the coming weeks.

The work will include removing low-hanging limbs from trees that assist a fire to climb into the canopy, removing dead and dying trees and thinning dense tree stands and removing invasive shrubbery that can create a “fire ladder” into overhead tree canopies.

Caltrans is working with local, regional, and state fire marshals to prioritize areas for vegetation control projects to reduce the ability for a fire to spread quickly.

Trimming and removals will be prescribed by a registered professional forester trained in forest fire fuel reduction.

Lanes will be closed to provide sufficient space for workers to safely remove trees and vegetation.

Caltrans is aware of the inconvenience and impacts the lane closures present to the traveling public and thanks the public for their patience as we work to enhance safety along both highways.

Signage and California Highway Patrol officers will be on hand to guide motorists. Please drive safely and slow for the Cone Zone for the safety of Caltrans workers and other motorists.
