The $65 million Confusion Hill Realignment Project, which involves the construction of two bridges across the South Fork Eel River, was accelerated by a full year due to a high level of cooperation between Caltrans and the various State and Federal regulatory agencies. The Federal Highway Administration approved an emergency relief request to help provide funding for this 1.5 mile long project. This project is essential for accessibility to the north coast due to the anticipated increase in the frequency and duration of slides. During the last 10 years over $33 million has been spent on slide repairs ($14 million during the 2005/2006 winter alone) resulting in almost $5 million in additional vehicle delay costs.

The Public Open House and Groundbreaking Ceremonies were held 7/26/2006.
