Caltrans to Close SR-56 from Ted Williams Parkway
To Rancho Penasquitos Boulevard

SAN DIEGO The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announced that all lanes of the eastbound and westbound State Route 56 (SR-56) will be closed between Rancho Penasquitos Boulevard and Ted Williams Parkway beginning Tuesday at 10 p.m., and reopening Wednesday at 5 a.m.  The on-ramps to Interstate 15 from both directions on SR-56 will also be closed. The northbound off-ramp to Ted Williams Parkway from I-15 will be closed.

This closure is called to allow work crews to complete a traffic switch on the bridge that crosses over I-15 at SR-56.  Traffic will be moved from the older span of the bridge to newly built lanes on the south side of the overcrossing.  In coming days, crews will demolish the old bridge deck and support columns and complete the new portion of the bridge.  When completed, the new overcrossing will be wider in order to accommodate the new I-15 Managed Lanes that will be in the median of the freeway.  The Managed Lanes will service carpools, multi-occupant vehicles and transit. Single-occupant vehicles will be able to use the Managed Lanes for a fee.

This temporary traffic switch will not reduce the number of westbound lanes on SR-56.  However, an additional lane will be added in the eastbound direction.  The additional eastbound lane should ease some of the normal congestion during the rush hour.

Detours: Signs will be in place to direct motorists to use local surface streets in order to get around the closure.

Caltrans will make every effort to minimize any disruption to the public during this closure.  Call (866) 890-1397 for information on the I-15 Managed Lanes Hotline.
