Demolition of SR-56 Bridge Over I-15 Continues
SAN DIEGO – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will continue the evening closures of some lanes on Interstate 15 (I-15) where it passes under State Route 56 for ongoing work along the I-15 Managed Lanes.
Lanes in both directions of I-15 will be subject to closure from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night beginning Tuesday (9/19) and continuing through Oct. 2. At least one lane will be open for both north and south traffic along I-15 during the bridge demolition effort.
“We are in the midst of tearing down the old north side of the SR-56 bridge and this partial freeway closure is part of that effort,” said Caltrans Resident Engineer Abu-Bakr Al-Jafri. “Our goal is to keep the noise level to a minimum while our contractor demolishes the existing structure.”
Al-Jafri said the connector ramps from the westbound SR-56 to the southbound I-15 and the eastbound SR-56 to the northbound I-15 will also be closed. Detour signs will placed in advance of the closed ramps to alert motorists of alternate routes.
Work on the $1 billion I-15 Managed Lanes Project began in mid-2003. When completed in 2012, this project will feature a roadway within the middle of I-15 that will service carpools, multi-occupant vehicles and transit. Single-occupant vehicles will also have access to the managed lanes for a fee.
Caltrans will make every effort to minimize disruption to the public during this closure. Call (866) 890-1397 for information on the I-15 Managed Lanes Hotline.
