Traffic Switch on Northbound I-15
Planned for Green Valley Creek Bridge Demolition
SAN DIEGO – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will switch traffic on the northbound Interstate 15 (I-15) this Thursday, Nov. 16 from the existing lanes to the new median lanes. This will allow the demolition of the northbound side of the bridge at Green Valley Creek.
Motorists will have access to five lanes of mixed-flow traffic – the same number as currently used at this location – during the one-year life of this switch. The actual switch will be virtually transparent to most motorists and it will not disrupt the flow of traffic.
“Most commuters will not even notice they are driving on different pavement,” said Caltrans I-15 Corridor Project Manager Thomas Bouquin. “The beautiful part about this is that it represents the first time motorists will actually drive on some of the new median pavement that is being built as part of the major improvement of I-15 in this area.”
Motorists will travel on one-half mile of new pavement in the freeway’s median from just south of the Green Valley Creek Undercrossing to approximately 2,000 feet south of the off-ramp to Pomerado Road (Highland Valley Road), which will remain open during the traffic switch.
The bridge demolition will occur over the next three to four weeks during day and evening hours. Any lane closure associated with the demolition will be short-term and announced ahead of time. This is a temporary one-year traffic switch and does not represent the actual opening of the Managed Lanes.
This work is part of a $427 million effort to build the “Middle Segment” of the I-15 Managed Lanes freeway improvement project. When completed and opened to traffic by late 2007 or early 2008, the freeway will feature state-of-the-art lanes in the roadway median, which will service carpools, vanpools and buses. Single-occupant vehicles will also have access to the managed lanes for a fee.
Caltrans will make every effort to minimize any disruption to the public during this closure. For more information call the I-15 Managed Lanes Hotline at (866) 890-1397. Detailed information on the I-15 Managed Lanes Project is accessible at http://www.keepsandiegomoving.com# # # #
