Ceremony Marks a Trifecta of Construction Projects Near International Border
SAN DIEGO –The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) hosted a ceremony today to mark the beginning of construction to extend State Route 905 (SR-905) three miles from the international border at Otay Mesa to Interstate 805 (I-805).
The event also celebrated the recent completion of the South Bay Expressway (SR-125 South) and the proposed project to add a third border crossing east of the Otay Mesa port of entry. Speakers included Caltrans Director Will Kempton, Senator Denise Ducheny, Lemon Grove Mayor and SANDAG Chair Mary Teresa Sessom, San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders and South Bay Expressway CEO Greg Hulsizer.
“Today, we begin work on a critical element of SR-905 that will ease the flow of traffic through the Otay Mesa area and at the border crossing,” said Kempton. “This represents the first of many upcoming projects along the corridor funded by Proposition 1B bond dollars to improve mobility across the region.”
The bond is funding $91.6 million of the $343 million, six-lane extension of SR-905.
Work on the final portion of SR-905 – from Britannia to I-805 – will begin later this year, completing the six-mile, $619 million project. It is scheduled to open in 2012.
