Q) Please clarify the seal pavement Joint detail on Sheet 3 of the revised plan. The detail does not show backer rod as noted on the special provision. Is backer rod required?

A) Backer rod is not required.

Q) The Seal Pavement Joint detail on sheet 3 shows the sealant must be flushed with the existing pavement surface. The general practice to attain this result is by overfilling the joints, then using a U shaped rubber squeeze to bring the sealant flushed with the surface. As a result there will be a small trace of sealant on each side of the joint surface about 1 1/2 inches wide. Is this acceptable, or does the pavment surface has to be completely clean?

A) Reasonable trace amounts are acceptable.

Q) This question refers to the cleaning of the Joint within addendum 2. Under "Cleaning the Joint" subheading in addendum 2, no sand blasting is mentioned. high airblast cleaning is the general practice to sufficiently clean cracks and joints in asphalt and concrete pavements. However, within the special provision (sheet 115) required sand blast cleaing of the joints prior to applying the joint seal. Please clarify if sand blast is still required despite the fact that it is not mentioned in the "Cleaning pavement Joints" within the addendum.

A) Sandblasting is not required.

Q) The joints located between route 41 and Rout 168 have been sealed previously, therefore no sawcutting and backer rod is required is resonable. The joints located between Route 90 and route 41 have not been sealed. Are these joints required resaw cutting, followed by sand blasting and airblasting as noted in the special provision for sealing pavement joints?

A) The joints between Route 41 and 99 are not sealed. However, please make your bid in accordance with the quantities shown on the Engineer's Estimate. Any changes made in the field will done through a Contract Change Order as determined necessary by the Resident Engineer.
