State Personnel Board Standards for
Environmental Planner - All Classes
In all classes cited below, additional
qualifying experience may be substituted for the required
education on a year-for-year basis. In addition, in all
classes (except Supervising Environmental Planner), a Master's
Degree may be substituted for two years of required experience
and a Doctorate Degree may be substituted for three years
experience. In the parenthetical classes, these degrees
must be in areas specific to the discipline of the class.

Environmental
Planner Either:
I. A Bachelor's Degree in the social
sciences, natural sciences, or environmental design arts;
Or:
II. One year of experience in social or natural environmental
planning, environmental research analysis or environmental
evaluation and education equivalent to graduation from college.
Or:
III. One year of experience in the
California state service performing environmental planning-related
duties in a class comparable in responsibility to Management
Services Technician.
Environmental Planner (Archaeology)
Either:
I. A Bachelor's Degree in Anthropology,
with a concentration in California Archaeology, including
one course in field work.
Or:
II. One year of experience in archaeological
surveys, studies, research, analysis, or evaluation, and
education equivalent to graduation from college.
Environmental Planner (Architectural
History) Either:
I. A Bachelor's Degree in Art History,
Architectural History or Historic Preservation, with a concentration
on American architectural history, including coursework
in 17th - 20th-century American architecture, and 19th -
20th-century architectural history.
Or:
II. One year of experience in research,
writing, or teaching in American architectural history,
or demonstrable professional activity with a government
agency, and academic institution, historical organization
or agency, museum or other professional institution, and
education equivalent to graduation from college.
Environmental
Planner (Natural Sciences) Either:
I. A Bachelor's Degree in the Biological
Sciences with concentration in either animal biology, plant
biology, ecology, fisheries management, or wildlife management.
Or:
II. One year of experience in environmental
planning, research, analysis, or evaluation of natural science
elements, and education equivalent to graduation from college.
Environmental Planner (Socioeconomic)
Either:
I. A Bachelor's Degree in either Economics,
Urban Planning, Geography, Sociology, or Business Administration
with a concentration in either Finance, Human Resources
Management, Marketing, Systems Management, or Real Estate
and Land Use Affairs.
Or:
II. One year of experience in environmental
planning, research, analysis, or evaluation of socioeconomic
elements, and education equivalent to graduation from college.

Associate
Environmental Planner Either:
I. One year in the California state
service performing environmental planning, analysis, research,
or evaluation in a class at a level equivalent to that of
Environmental Planner, (salary) Range C.
Or:
II. Three years of experience in environmental
planning, research, analysis, or evaluation, at least one
year of which must have been equivalent in level to work
performed by an Environmental Planner, (salary) Range C,
in the California state service.
Associate Environmental Planner
(Parenthetical Classes) Qualifications are the same as for
the associate level generalist class except that both the
degree and the three years of experience must be specific
to the class, as described in the entry level Environmental
Planner series, above.

Senior Environmental
Planner Either:
I. One year in the California state
service performing environmental planning, environmental
research analysis or evaluation in a class at a level comparable
to that of Associate Environmental Planner.
Or:
II. Four years of experience directing
or conduction environmental studies or managing an interdisciplinary
team preparing environmental documents, at least one year
of which must have been equivalent in level to work performed
by an Associate Environmental Planner in the California
state service, and education equivalent to graduation from
college.

Supervising Environmental
Planner
I. One year of experience in the California
state service performing the more difficult and complex work
on special environmental projects or research studies as an
in-house consultant, or managing an interdisciplinary team
preparing environmental studies and environmental documents
in a class at a level equivalent to that of Senior Environmental
Planner.
Or:
II. Five years of experience in conducting
comprehensive environmental studies of statewide significance
and preparing environmental documents, at lease one year of
which must have been equivalent in level to work performed
by a Senior Environmental in the California state service,
and education equivalent to graduation from college.
