Type-60-Median-Barrier-MASH-2016
Background
For two decades, Caltrans has used the Type 60 single slope concrete median barrier with sloping face of 9.1° from vertical which meets crash test requirements for Test Level 3 (TL-3, 65 mph or less) of the National Cooperative Highway Research Committee Report 350 guidelines (Report 350). The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has determined that the Texas Transportation Institute (TTI) has successfully crash tested a 10.8° single slope concrete barrier which meets Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware 2009 (MASH) TL-3 for a pickup (test 3-11). While this barrier is considered to perform similarly to the Type 60, no other single slope concrete barrier has been tested to MASH TL-3 with a small car (test 3-10). Caltrans recognized the high priority need for compliance crash testing of the Type 60 with a small car to MASH Test Level 3 criteria.
A 150-foot test section of Type 60 median barrier was used for the crash test. The barrier was constructed in 2006 at the Caltrans Dynamic Test Facility for a previous project. The barrier design conformed to Caltrans 1999 Standard Plans A76A and A76B and is 36” high.
